Product details

This is the first book about the painter Martha Stettler (1870-1945), who was born in Bern and spent her life working in Paris. It richly illustrates her life journey and artistic output. Martha Stettler favored outdoor scenes, with the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Tuileries, and the gardens of Versailles being her most popular settings. She consistently advocated for female artists and was a co-founder and director of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where her students included Alberto Giacometti and Meret Oppenheim. She received prestigious awards at international exhibitions and was the first Swiss woman to exhibit at the Venice Biennale in 1920. Her work, which is associated with late Impressionism, was widely recognized during her lifetime, and this publication highlights her significance in the painting of the first quarter of the 20th century.
