Product details

The Swiss painter Max Gubler (1898-1973), known for his work, suffered a mental and physical breakdown at the peak of his success in 1957 and spent the last fifteen years of his life in psychiatric institutions. During the first three years of this period of suffering, he painted periodically in clinics and at home, where he was under medical supervision. His oeuvre of 400 paintings was kept hidden from the public. This book presents for the first time the late works of the painter and outlines his life story as a self-fulfilling legend caught between genius and madness. Important commentary on the radicalized image production during this crisis period comes from the unpublished diaries of art historian and friend Gotthard Jedlicka (1899-1965). In portraits, landscapes, couple images, and 'wild heads,' the artist sought to confront disturbances with a new reality. Visually.
