When the Americans bombed Schaffhausen in 1944, valuable portraits of members of the Peyer family were also destroyed; the artist Tobias Stimmer had created them in the 16th century. However, in 1946, the Peyer Tobias Stimmer Foundation was established from American reparations payments. Over its 60 years of existence, the foundation acquired Renaissance and Baroque art and loaned it to the Museum zu Allerheiligen. The collection, which focuses on the Lake Constance region, is distinguished by its wealth of various techniques. In addition to paintings, it features embroideries, goldsmithing, and glassworks. The Swiss Institute for Art Research has produced a collection catalog that presents all works with color images, detailed descriptions, and scholarly apparatus.
