Meret Oppenheim's most famous works belong to the canon of 20th-century European art, foremost among them the fur cup Déjeuner en fourrure, which has been on display at MoMA since 1936. Like her equally important lyrical texts and dream records, the previously unpublished album 'From Childhood to 1943' serves as both an independent form of expression and a source for understanding her work. The visual centerpiece of this extensive volume is the facsimile of the 92-page album, in which the 45-year-old artist has collaged a handwritten, illustrated, and photo-augmented autobiography. Surrounding it are over 1,000 unpublished documents from seven decades presented in their original wording: letters to her mother, father, and husband, as well as correspondence with artists such as Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Leonor Fini, and intellectuals.
