The Vals Spa, opened in 1996, quickly became an icon of Swiss and international architecture. The building is intertwined with the history and materials of the location, with the gneiss used for the exterior and interior facades sourced from the nearby area. Here, the principle of reduction to the essential applies. One does not move through a wellness landscape, but rather experiences the elemental nature of water, with its varying temperatures, different-sized pools, and spaces. For the first time, the building is documented in its own monograph featuring texts by Sigrid Hauser and Peter Zumthor, numerous illustrations, sketches, and plans by Peter Zumthor, as well as newly taken photographs by Hélène Binet.
