Bus stops, toilet booths, mailboxes, gas stations: we casually notice them, use them, and forget them immediately. In small Switzerland, the landscape is dotted with objects that serve specific purposes, such as benches, signs, and phone booths. The vastness of America is less developed and much more expansive, yet there too, the landscape is under pressure, sliced by roads and filled with industrially manufactured items. Photographer Roland Iselin has found many common motifs on his Unguided Road Trip through Switzerland and America, his second home: cow gates, shooting houses, memorial crosses for traffic victims, and rest areas. And because the furnishing of a landscape is not random, it also reflects the state of a society. Through Iselin's images, values and ideals, as well as the behavioral influence of all designed places, become visible.
