During his short time as the head of the city expansion office in Munich, architect Theodor Fischer laid a fundamental basis for the further urban development of the city between 1893 and 1901, both in planning and design aspects. In more than 400 individual plans, Fischer defined streets and public spaces that continue to shape the characteristic image of many neighborhoods in the city today. The engagement of Theodor Fischer with the specific location, the cultural heritage, and the objective needs of the time, as documented in his numerous individual plans, has in turn created authentic places that have become part of the familiar image of Munich. To implement the results of the 1891 city expansion competition, city building officer Wilhelm Rettig proposed the establishment of a city expansion office as an independent authority.
