Edward Hopper (1882 - 1967), the most prominent representative of realism in American painting, meticulously kept records of each of his works. In notebooks, which are now part of the extensive Hopper collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, he documented, accompanied by sketches of completed or considered motifs, which paintings he had created, which he had sold, the receipt of payments, the materials used, and other relevant notes. However, Hopper's notes on his own work go beyond the daily bookkeeping of an artist, as they provide personal insights into the creative process of a man known for being reserved and taciturn, who dedicated himself to the ordinary like no other in his art. Our volume presents selected pages from Hopper's ledger alongside the corresponding paintings.
