Wolfgang Kemp, one of the most renowned contemporary German art historians and an author with Schirmer/Mosel since its inception, will turn sixty in May 2006. As a kind of commemorative publication for this anniversary, we are reissuing four of his eight books published with us in a new format: With his essays on the history and theory of photography, first published in 1978, Wolfgang Kemp was one of the first to open the ongoing debate about an appropriate definition and interpretation of the medium. By fundamentally deciding to address the historical development not as is usually done by individuals, periods, and genres, but rather systematically according to overarching concepts, he laid the foundation for a new photo-aesthetic at that time. This is illustrated through selected images from various fields.
