Guido Mangold, born in 1934 in Ravensburg and now residing in Ottobrunn near Munich, is considered one of the most renowned German landscape and magazine photographers after 1945. Originally trained as a pastry chef, he soon chose photography and studied under Otto Steinert at the Werkkunstschule Saarbrücken and the Folkwang School in Essen. His early black-and-white photographs of the industrial landscapes in the Ruhr area are still influenced by the strict graphic style of his teacher. Over time, he developed his characteristic style while working for magazines such as Quick, twen, Jasmin, Geo, and Art, which combines formal rigor with a sensitive observational ability. Mangold is also known as the discoverer of the legendary cover girl Uschi Obermaier, whom he photographed multiple times for twen.
