Bernd and Hilla Becher are the founders of a new documentary photography. Originating from the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where they teach, their fame and the reputation of their school have now spread worldwide. Their method is a consistent combination of art and scientific systematics, working in typological series and the comparative aspect. The series also became an aesthetic principle in their photographs. Their initial documentation of decaying functional buildings from the early industrial age was titled Anonymous Sculptures by Bernd and Hilla Becher. They began in the Siegerland, moved on to the Ruhr area, and then to Belgium. In 1965, they documented the industrial monuments of Great Britain, and from 1968, those of the USA as well.
