John Profumo, British Minister of War, fell from grace due to an affair with call girl Christine Keeler, who was simultaneously involved with a Soviet naval attaché. The colorful mastermind behind this sensational story, which involved sex and drugs, pool parties and parliamentarians, perjury and stabbings, British aristocracy and the West Indian underworld, as well as politics, espionage, and greed, was society osteopath, portrait painter, and occasional reporter Dr. Stephen Ward (1912-1963). Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, Lord Astor, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. were among his illustrious patients. He had painted members of the Royal Family and reported on the Eichmann trial for the Daily Telegraph. In the wake of the Profumo affair, he was charged with pimping in a controversial sensational trial in 1963 and died on the eve of the final trial.
