Product details

Karl Hubbuch (1891-1979) belongs to the so-called Verists of the New Objectivity, alongside Max Beckmann, George Grosz, and Otto Dix. He became known primarily for his drawings, which include both bitterly ironic social allegories and highly sensitive portraits and character studies. In this book, he is discovered for the first time as a photographer. Hubbuch volunteered for service in World War I and returned, like many of his artist friends, disillusioned and marked for life. He lost his professorship at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts with the rise of the Nazis in 1933. Condemned as "degenerate," he led a life of inner emigration as a porcelain painter. Shaped by the experiences of his time, Hubbuch's interest was entirely focused on the individual and their social existence. His photographs, acquired by the Munich City Museum in the 1990s, consist of 600 negatives and 100 prints.
