Photography has always occupied Cy Twombly since his student days, but it was only in recent years that this interest crystallized into an independent artistic concept. Our volume featuring photographs from 1951 to 2007 is an aesthetic sensation. Like his other visual works, Twombly's photographic pieces are documents of a fascinatingly enigmatic, personal poetry. His own studios in Lexington and Gaeta, details of his sculptures and sculptural collections, landscape motifs, fruits, and flowers appear in a mysteriously altered form on these delicate sheets. Printed in matte colors on matte paper using a dry print process that gives them a velvety, almost grainy tone, the images vaguely evoke the pictorialist tradition in photography from the turn of the century.
