Simone Nieweg, born in 1962 and a master student of Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, has been photographing gardens and landscapes on the outskirts of settlements and cities since her beginnings—unspectacular motifs that achieve the highest aesthetic impact. Her new book, the second published by Schirmer/Mosel, gathers nearly all variations of small-scale agricultural cultivation, from allotment gardens and private vegetable patches to meadows and fallow land, forest edges, arable land, and grain fields. Nieweg consistently photographs her subjects in color and in a soft, almost shadowless light that leaves the fine structure of the images unspoiled. Furthermore, her long exposures require absolute stillness to capture plants and landscapes with unprecedented sharpness and detail.
