He was one of the "Magnificent Seven" and starred in "Cincinnati Kid," "Bullitt," and "The Thomas Crown Affair." Born to be a getaway driver, he was always on the run, constantly chasing someone: on horseback, preferably on a motorcycle, in the legendary Ford Mustang, and most of all in his own Porsche 908. In everything he did, Steve McQueen (1930-1980), who rose from a troubled childhood to become a Hollywood idol, maintained a breathtaking pace: thirty films in 26 years, daring car chases in which he rarely used a stunt double, and a second place finish at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970. Staying cool in even the most precarious situations was his trademark. In 1963, he was captured by Life photographer John Dominis during a photo shoot in a sulfur bath: the inevitable cigarette dangling from his lips, a bottle of red wine on the edge of the tub, and a female nude in the background.
