Our book serves as a tribute to Gerhard Richter, whose 80th birthday was celebrated in February 2012. Richter's now world-famous works, largely painterly interpretations of photographic images, inspired American artist and photographer Louise Lawler, born in 1947, to create a unique series: The 21 works gathered here from two decades illustrate how Gerhard Richter's paintings are presented, staged, and received in museums, commercial galleries, auction houses, and in private and public collections. Through selected Richter paintings, whether in situ or in transit, we learn a great deal about the handling of modern art at various levels of the contemporary art world. The sharp, colorful, almost minimalist compositions of Lawler's photographs resonate with Richter's as well.
