Hanna Schygulla, born in 1943 in Katowice (Königshütte) in Silesia, grew up in Munich as a refugee and later as a child of the economic miracle. She became the female star of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's films, which were made at breakneck speed between 1969 (Love is colder than death) and 1981 (Lili Marleen). Fassbinder met Hanna Schygulla in 1963 at acting school and early on had the vision that she would become an essential cornerstone, perhaps even something like a motor of his then still imaginary film work.
