The passionately debated work of Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) during his lifetime is now regarded as one of the most significant and influential contributions to the visual arts of the 20th century. Given the vast scope, diversity, and complexity, a summary overview of Beuys's oeuvre seems almost presumptuous. Nevertheless, our comprehensive overview, first published in 1996 and set to be released in its third edition on the 30th anniversary of the artist's death on January 23rd next year, has successfully established itself internationally. A total of 145 visual works from all areas of his creative output—drawings and watercolors, prints and multiples, sculptures and objects, spaces and actions—demonstrate the creative, design, and intellectual potential of an artist who is still inadequately described as a sculptor, teacher, and revolutionary.
