Schizophrenia is arguably the mental illness most commonly associated with violence in the population, partly due to media reporting. However, the fact that individuals with schizophrenia are more often victims of aggression from others or may find death by their own hand is significantly less acknowledged. The new volume of the Vienna Series on Forensic Psychiatry provides a comprehensive overview of all areas of violence by and against schizophrenic individuals, as well as the societal and health policy frameworks that have led to a marked increase in the commitment of these patients to secure psychiatric facilities over the past 20 years.
