Few writings can be as profound and as closed off from contemporary culture as the Book of the Dead. Properly titled: The Writing of the Return on (New) Day: Pir em haru - it speaks a secret yet powerful language to our time. This, however, does not prevent our learned linguistic craftsmen from viewing it as a children's primer and looking down upon it from the throne of their academic wisdom, as if it were childish nonsense. Few researchers, such as Maspero, Champollion, Dümichen, and Brugsch, have been honest enough to see behind this sphinx-like document of humanity the greatest, yet almost faded testimony of a cultural epoch that far surpasses today's in inner depth, tranquility, and clarity. But in an age that is full of vanity and arrogance, placing itself above all other times, living only in the value of itself and in the delusion of how splendidly far it has come, the cherubim silently guarding the Egyptian mysteries of the dead are unlikely to have much to say. May these generations pass away and fall asleep again, the Sphinx in the desert sands of the ancient Pharaoh's realm will keep watch. According to the rolling course of time, according to the bronze yet silent heavenly law of the stars above, their epoch will also return. The becoming of God will no longer be an empty catchphrase but will again become the natural attribute of humanity, which is true to itself and looks down upon the dust particles of what today is referred to as intelligent high culture.
