Caring for individuals with dementia is not only about providing medically sound care but also about upholding human dignity. The person with dementia, their relatives, and caregivers need appreciation, empathetic understanding, acceptance, and kindness. The 5th edition of this standard work is also oriented towards these values and provides a foundation for them. New insights into the disease of dementia have been incorporated; aspects such as attention, appreciation, basic communication, and the ABEDL concept are particularly emphasized. With current knowledge and a respectful attitude, the care of individuals with dementia can be improved. This leads to a high quality of care without compromising the creativity and individuality of the caregiving process. The focus is always on the individual quality of life of the person with dementia, as their situation forms the framework for action.
