Product details

I pity anyone who was not an anarchist at twenty. Georges Clemenceau. Since the mid-19th century, socialism emerged as a counter-movement in the countries of early capitalism in Northwestern Europe. With the development of the labor movement, a significant process of general emancipation also began. Quickly, two main currents formed from the discussions and factional struggles, identifiable by two names on the radical side of the movement: Karl Marx for the authoritarian wing and Michael Bakunin for the anti-authoritarian wing of the labor movement. Anarchism, with its positive utopia, certainly placed a greater claim on the moral and ethical values of humanity. However, its demands for indivisible freedom for all people, as well as its uncompromising rejection of any elitist thinking and any form of 'temporary' concessions to power structures, have never succeeded in establishing anarchy within society. Compounding this issue was the fact that various forms of anarchism had already developed by the mid-19th century. Thus, the emergence of a homogeneous movement was not possible. The book 'Anarchism' presents these different directions within the anarchist movement, as well as the role of anarchists during the revolutions from the Paris Commune of 1871 to the student movement of 1968. Contrary to the Clemenceau quote, anarchism is not solely a 'privilege' of youth, although this is often suggested; rather, as Gustav Landauer noted: Anarchy is not a matter of demands, but of life.
