Proverbs play an extremely important role in the collective consciousness of the Portuguese people. They represent the "wisdom of the people." Peter Koj has compiled 600 of the most well-known Portuguese proverbs and presents them in 60 episodes. He follows the common practice observed in Portugal of quoting only the first half of a proverb in a conversation, as everyone knows the second half. In his book, Peter Koj does provide the second half of each proverb, but not in the same order as the first half. The fun lies in correctly matching the two halves. For those unfamiliar with Portuguese, there is an interlinear translation into German and, of course, an answer key. Additionally, Hamburg-based book illustrator Marlies Schaper has illustrated several of the proverbs. Alongside this main section, there are various excursions on topics such as the "wisdom" of proverbs or the popular distortion of proverbs in Portugal, as well as a lesson plan for advanced learners. An alphabetical index of the proverbs collected in this book and a thematic index complete the work, making it a useful reference tool. The author fills a painfully felt gap with this book. The proverb, which has been treated somewhat neglectfully in Portuguese teaching materials, is not only an excellent didactic tool for acquiring difficult linguistic phenomena, but it also provides access to areas such as conversation culture, advertising, and even literature, as it serves as a stylistic device for several renowned authors.
