Style and stylistics are often considered subjective terms that are difficult to define linguistically. This work establishes a solid foundation for the description of stylistic phenomena. Style is understood as a dual-faceted category: on one hand, the style of a text adheres to conventions and norms, while on the other hand, it is expected to have an individual component that contributes to the success of the text. Conventions may also be deviated from to some extent. Style is always based on the selection from the systematic guidelines that a language offers. The linguistic areas relevant for determining style include text construction strategies, the fundamental communicative areas of functional styles, and text types. Paying attention to these aspects provides the basis for individual stylistic decisions. Each chapter of this book presents a style.
