The handbook addresses the topic of writing with regard to the following questions: What is the history of the forms and practices of current writing instruction? What competencies are important for writing and how are they interconnected? How do traditional essay didactics relate to more recent process-oriented writing didactics? What linguistic skills do students need for writing and how can these be fostered? How do students' text competencies develop? What characterizes writing in the second language German? The 30 articles in the handbook report on research related to relevant forms of learning: narrating, reporting, describing, guiding, arguing, among others.
