At the end of the 18th century, a small booklet titled Sefer shel Bejnonim, or Likkutei Amarim, was published for the first time. Subsequently, this first systematic presentation of Chabad Chassidism became known as the "Book of Tanya" and revolutionized Jewish life and thought as a whole. Its author, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, aimed to provide every Jew with a deeper religious understanding of their spiritual life, drawing on Kabbalistic worldviews as well as the mystical teachings of the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid of Mezritch. This was intended to strengthen the orientation towards God and enable a joyful worship experience. The rapid and ongoing success of the "Book of Tanya" is evidenced by the fact that it is currently one of the most printed Jewish books in the world, with nearly 6,000 editions.
