Product details

Montage is the only new art form that emerged in the 20th century. Alfred Hitchcock. Film critic Michael Althen refers to them as "the people with scissors for hands," while Alexander Kluge calls them "the balancers." They themselves refer to their work as "cutting masters," "cutters," or more recently, "editors." What they actually do largely happens behind the scenes and is rarely described. In the case of documentary films, which is the main focus of this volume, there is usually no developed script. Unlike feature films, the narrative is often discovered during the editing process. This means that the final form of the documentary film we see on the screen is even more a product of the work that takes place in the editing room. Alongside the craftsmanship, this represents a distinct form of authorship. The author, filmmaker, and editor Gabriele Voss sheds light on the work of viewing, cutting, and editing through a description of her own work experiences as well as interviews with twelve colleagues: Raimund Barthelmes, Peter Przygodda, Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus, Barbara Hennings, Thomas Giefer, Brigitte Kirsche, Bettina Böhler, Wolfgang Widerhofer, Elfi Kreiter, Mathilde Bonnefoy, Heide Breitel, Wolfgang Widerhofer. The volume is completed by two conversations with author Alexander Kluge and brain researcher Wolf Singer.
