The great Serbian novelist tells his authentic family story: In the tumultuous life of his mother, the fate of his war-torn country is reflected. For the sake of her first husband, she converted to Judaism and had to flee from fascist-ruled Croatia with him and their two sons during World War II. But even in Serbia, the family is not safe; her husband is deported and shot by the German occupying forces. After the death of her sons, she meets her second husband, a Jew who lost his family and survived a German prisoner-of-war camp. When the misfortunes of the Balkans seem to repeat themselves in the 1990s, she falls in love again.
