Author's Portrait
Georg Büchner was born on October 17, 1813, in Goddelau near Darmstadt and died on February 19, 1837, in Zurich. He was the first of six children. From 1831, he studied medicine and natural sciences in Strasbourg and from 1833 also history and philosophy in Giessen. In 1834, he founded the secret society for human rights and, together with Ludwig Weidig, a leading opposition figure, wrote the pamphlet Hessischer Landbote. With this, they called upon the Hessian rural population to revolution against oppression. In 1834, he moved to Darmstadt. During this time, Danton's Death was created. A year later, he fled to Strasbourg. In 1836, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Zurich and began his teaching career as a private lecturer in comparative anatomy. Even before his move to Zurich, Büchner had started his work on Woyzeck. The work remained a fragment. In early 1837, Büchner fell ill with typhus and shortly thereafter died from this disease.
