The theological question of the true image as a systematic guiding question. From the Eikon to the Logos and back - the method of this study reverses the usual direction of questioning, which seeks to overwhelm and negate the image with the concept, instead of seeing it and confronting its "view." The Logos competes with the Eikon, and the Eikon provokes the Logos, without either excluding the other. The art-historical question of the "true image" (Hans Belting) leads to the systematic-theological question of the iconicity of all revelation. The Second Nicaea as a conclusion of the ancient Christological councils orders the veneration of cult images, without being adequately received in Western and Eastern theology. The central Christian cult image of the Roman Veronica unfolds its own logic, with which the desiderata of a theological treatise on images are formulated.
