The "Musical Form Theory" systematically and clearly explains the most important types of musical forms from both the past and present. The form is always viewed in its dramatic function for the overall work, so that the investigations do not only focus on pure structural analyses but also include questions of reception and artistic evaluation. The presentation is complemented by the treatment of fundamental music theory rules that contribute to the formation of these forms, as well as by historical excursions: the musical forms are traced in their historical development and illustrated with examples ranging from simple songs to large symphonic forms, thereby highlighting the aspect of their continuous transformation and renewal, their procedural character, and their "functioning" in connection with changed contents and statements.
