Qi Gong, a form of breath healing gymnastics, is a practice of traditional Chinese medicine. It combines breathing, flowing movements, stretching, and concentration on various meridians (energy pathways) into a holistic health system that is fundamentally easy to learn. For musicians, four aspects of this holistic method are crucial: the connection between breath and musical expression, stress management and prevention, muscular tension, and playing technique as well as balancing physical strain caused by playing posture. The practical exercise concept presented here leads to a unity of the performer with the music and themselves, achieving Wu Wei – the act of doing by not doing. The theoretical foundations from traditional Chinese medicine and Western movement theory are presented in an easily understandable manner.
