The topos "Write as you speak" refers to nearly everything that touches on the relationship between speaking and writing. It proves to be a crucial point in the tension between orality and literacy, which is explored here in its complexity. The history of the topos, the systematics of the relationship between spoken and written communication, as well as orality/literacy research, particularly the dependency concept and the autonomy debate, are examined.
