Guilt and the feeling of guilt are central themes of human existence. In mythology, drama, and everyday interactions between people, guilt is regarded as a compass for behavior. Sigmund Freud, from the very beginning of his development of depth psychology, dealt with guilt and feelings of guilt, and in this differentiation, he made clear the dialectic of guilt and guilt feelings: the feeling of guilt is not only a problem for the perpetrator, but in the Oedipus conflict, for example, the inactive feeling and wishing alone brings about the feeling of guilt. The conscience, which Freud refers to as the superego, is constituted from feelings of guilt and thus makes a person capable of guilt, but also capable of maturation. In psychoanalytic object relations theory, the perpetrator's guilt can be seen as one side of the trauma that arises from violence.
