The school system in Sweden is considered one of the most important agents of socialization, playing a crucial role in preparing students for working life and in breaking down traditional patterns of study and career choice. The career guidance program, known as SYO, which was introduced in Swedish primary schools in the early 1970s, served as the most important tool for these efforts. Numerous studies on the gender situation in the Swedish labor market show that, while the integration of women into the workforce is very high compared to other European countries, it is largely confined to the public sector.
