The relationship between schools and Muslim households is strained, if not broken. Many teachers respond irritably to Muslims, who are rarely seen as an enrichment. Parents fear discrimination and the devaluation of their religion. Conflicts over swimming lessons and school trips are just the most visible expression of these tensions. As part of the project "Bridges in the Neighborhood," Werner Schiffauer and his team have initiated a dialogue between parents, representatives of mosque communities, and teachers, aiming to kickstart a learning process. Beyond all clichés of parallel societies and refusal to integrate, they highlight where the specific hurdles for better coexistence lie.
