In recent years, few disorder profiles have undergone as significant a transformation as that of children's language. This pertains not only to the explanation and interpretation of their causes and contexts but also to their treatment. This is particularly true for childhood speech disorders. The outdated, deficit-oriented umbrella term "dyslalia" can now, thanks to newer research findings, be viewed in a much more differentiated and also ability-oriented manner within a speech processing model. Based on the current classification of childhood speech disorders into purely phonetic articulation disorders, phonological delays, consistent and inconsistent phonological disorders, a pathway has been opened for a phonologically oriented therapy tailored to the specific focus of the disorder.
