Product details

Dysarthria is a speech disorder that affects articulation, voice, and breathing. It occurs as a result of strokes and traumatic brain injuries. Approximately 35,000 people are affected annually in German-speaking countries. For many of these individuals, dysarthria becomes chronic. The main problem for those with dysarthria is that they are often difficult to understand due to the speech disorder, and their manner of speaking often appears very unnatural and conspicuous. As a result, dysarthric speakers are often stigmatized in public. Dysarthria can have extensive psycho-social consequences: job loss, social isolation, and depressive moods are common. Family members are typically affected as well. Both groups—those affected and their relatives—must come to terms with the fact that nothing is as it once was during the challenging process of coping with the illness. This guide is the first of its kind. Relatives will find essential insights about dysarthria presented in a well-founded manner. Topics include: causes, symptoms, and consequences of dysarthria, the process of coping with the illness, the goals and purposes of speech therapy, and communication strategies for everyday life. At the end, there are useful tips, book recommendations, and a glossary that explains the most important technical terms.
