People with speech apraxia have difficulties planning speech movements as well as the speed and melody of speaking. They pronounce sounds imprecisely because they struggle to select the correct movements of the articulatory organs for speaking. Additionally, individuals with speech apraxia often speak slowly and in syllables. Their speech melody often sounds monotonous. The listener has difficulty understanding what is being said or may get the impression that incorrect sounds are being pronounced. Besides communication difficulties, speech apraxia can also have extensive psychosocial consequences, such as job loss and social isolation. Speech apraxia is often a result of a stroke.
