French and German anti-discrimination law are significantly shaped by European anti-discrimination directives. Unlike in Germany, the legal protection against discrimination in France has a long tradition that has developed independently of European requirements. In her work, the author presents the development of French discrimination prohibitions in criminal, labor, and civil law. She compares these with the regulations of the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) in a legal comparative manner. Although France has more comprehensive discrimination prohibitions in all areas of law than Germany, the author concludes that the level of protection against discrimination in everyday life does not differ significantly between the countries examined.
