The history of Europe is also a history of tolerance. However, for the most part, it has been the opposite: a history of intolerance. It is all the more remarkable that Europe eventually began to define itself through tolerance, viewing it as the ethical principle it must adhere to. While this is not true for Europe alone, it is Europe that should find its mission in this: in light of the intolerance it has caused worldwide, it must position itself even more as a culture of tolerance. It should direct this ethical claim towards itself and thus become an example of lived tolerance. This is the focus of this book.
