They are highly praised by advertising and food corporations: Superfoods are said to be weight loss aids, fountains of youth, and preventatives against all sorts of diseases in one. But what health benefits do these touted superfoods really provide? And what about the production conditions? Some come from the tropical rainforest, where sustainable use is not possible, others come from intensive farming with pesticide use, and still others must be flown to Europe, leaving a correspondingly large ecological footprint. Even more questionable is the consumption of expensive superfoods like acai berries, chia seeds, kamukamu, etc. in their processed forms.
