Chess is a game that pushes the boundaries of imagination. It trains the mind and personality, enhances concentration and learning abilities even more than mathematics, and calms nervous children better than Ritalin. It is truly a panacea for the ailments of our time. Above all, chess is also an exceedingly sophisticated sport with significant thrill potential: during a multi-hour competition, where nothing less than glory, honor, bread, and wine is at stake, hands tremble, eyes flicker, ears ring, and sweat flows just as much as in adrenaline sports. And chess is accessible to the masses: millions of people play chess worldwide, with at least 93,000 active players in Germany alone, as that is the number of members in the German Chess Federation. It is high time to recognize this sport, which uniquely promotes the interplay of play and intellect.
