In 1972, together with Edna Adelson, Vivian Shapiro, and others, psychoanalyst Selma Fraiberg founded the Child Development Project in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Here, professionals from child analysis, psychology, psychiatry, social work, and infant care collaborated in an outpatient clinic to develop a psychoanalytically based clinical intervention method aimed at helping babies whose physical and/or emotional development was at risk, along with their often underage, traumatized, and impoverished mothers. Through detailed case descriptions, the development of the project, the method of clinical assessment, the creation of individual treatment plans, and the monitoring of therapy success are explained. It becomes clear how a viable therapeutic alliance can be established despite adverse social conditions, and how the mother-baby pair can be effectively assisted using a clear interpretive technique.
