On one hand, one might expect such a title to represent the collected, hard-to-find side projects of an aging artist - rather than a debut album. And ambient? The average listener usually expects something completely different from what Aphex Twin delivers on his first album. From the very beginning, the Irishman Richard D. James, aka Aphex Twin, makes it clear that he is not the type to fulfill expectations. While the entire Western world is erupting around him to celebrate the triumph of techno, Loveparade, and colorful pills, he is tinkering with more than quirky tracks at the farthest tip of the Cornwall peninsula. Compared to his intricate music, other techno tracks from that era often seem clumsy and heavy. Aphex Twin does not deliver anything less than a complete reimagining of techno on his debut album.
