As a teenager, Gustav Landauer began writing poetry (lyric, dramas, and novellas). In 1893, his only still-readable novel "The Preacher of Death" was published. Novellas such as "A Boy's Life," "Arnold Himmelheber," "Living Dead," fairy tales like "The Yellow Stone," poems like "Spanish Ballad," dramas such as "After Years," satires, and translations of Walt Whitman and Rabindranath Tagore followed. As a widely recognized expert in German-speaking and international literature, his own creativity was always focused on a fundamental change in society towards greater freedom, social individuality, justice, and equality for all people in his thinking, writing, and actions.
