Product details

A progressive fragmentation of the cultural landscape in Central Europe has led and continues to lead to an increasing isolation of the remaining habitats for native animal and plant species. A reduced or even completely absent gene flow between populations of fragmented habitats further increases the likelihood of extinction, particularly for stenotopic or stenophagous species, as well as those with weak dispersal abilities. Therefore, a large-scale connectivity of habitats through suitable dispersal routes or corridors is a crucial prerequisite for the long-term preservation and protection of biodiversity. However, especially in landscapes where open land and forest habitats interweave, conflicts often arise in habitat connectivity, as corridors aimed at connecting a specific habitat type frequently lead to further fragmentation.
