Borrelia burgdorferi was identified as the cause of Lyme disease in 1981/1982 at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton by the Basel-based namesake Dr. Willy Burgdorfer. The New York Times Magazine described Lyme disease as the infectious disease that spreads the fastest in the United States after AIDS. In Germany, approximately 100,000 people are newly diagnosed each year. According to the author, the disease is still not sufficiently recognized among doctors and naturopaths and is often overlooked due to the variety of its symptoms.
