Product details

This work presents a meaningful and comprehensible system of the German victim cult for the first time in 1884. It examines the original forms of various customs and compares them for regional differences. Without getting lost in comparative excursions into the mythologies of other peoples, Ulrich Jahn successfully highlights the origins of the customs and traditions that are still alive today. The Germanist and narrative researcher Ulrich Jahn became known for his folk tales from Pomerania and Rügen, whose success earned him the nickname "Pomeranian Grimm." Together with the physician Rudolf Virchow, Jahn founded the Museum of German Folk Costumes and Products of Domestic Industry, the preserved collections of which can now be seen at the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin. This work establishes Ulrich Jahn's reputation in the field of mythology and folklore studies.
